Services
I provide individual therapy to children, adolescents, young adults, and adults who make up a diverse group of individuals facing a variety of personal, interpersonal, academic and/or professional struggles. More specifically, some of these challenges include anxiety, sadness or depression, interpersonal difficulties, stress, significant life changes, challenges at school or work, and family stressors.
The work of therapy is shaped by each individual’s specific needs and goals, which often include increasing self-understanding and awareness, mending emotional struggles, and helping clients to explore aspects of their lives that they would better like to understand and strengthen. I most often utilize a psychodynamic and insight-oriented approach, however, as is appropriate, I also draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness and stress reduction, and other approaches, as is indicated by the focus of the treatment.
Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on an individual’s relationship with their external world. For those who have the capacity to be insightful and self-reflective about their thoughts and actions, this is a very successful tool for self-growth, improved health, and a decrease in depressive or anxious feelings, as well as maladaptive behaviors. Focus is paid to supporting an individual so they may better understand, recognize, express, and overcome negative and contradictory feelings to improve their interpersonal relationships and sense of self. Through active exploration of past and current experiences and emotions, individuals are able to better understand current struggles and difficulties and change their behavior in a positive manner.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that an individual’s thoughts and feelings strongly impact the way they behave. The goal of CBT is to help an individual identify and challenge irrational and maladaptive thoughts so they will be able to challenge and change negative and unwanted behaviors.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
I believe the relationship between client and therapist is highly essential in nurturing growth, promoting wellness, and developing increased self-awareness. For many people, therapy provides a place for deepening self-understanding, strengthening self-confidence, and increasing health and functioning.
Children and teens present unique challenges. The many natural developmental changes that occur through these years impact self-understanding and awareness, social relationships, and family dynamics. Additionally, both successes and challenges at school are deeply impactful. Working with a therapist can be very helpful in navigating the social, educational, and familial experiences that are part of growing up so children and teens can become healthy and happy adults. When working with children and teens, parental collaboration, consultation, and support is also often essential in shaping the success of the work; and I speak with schools, psychiatrists, and others, as needed.
Children & Adolescents
All parents experience stress and significant demands. Parenting children with social, emotional, and/or behavioral struggles can be highly challenging. Further, parenting during transitional times such as divorce, school changes, and family illness can add additional difficulties. I work to support parents so they can best communicate with and support their children, and so parents are also able to care for themselves.
Parent Consultation
School & Organizational Consultation
I provide consultation services to administrative and leadership teams, administrators and leaders, and teachers and teaching teams. By assessing the mental health needs of a community, a school or organization can gain useful insight into where strengths and challenges exist. Through conversation, interviews, and observations I will gather information that will allow me to provide concrete feedback and suggestions about how to enhance the wellness and health of your community and the individuals of which it is composed. I can also advise on setting up appropriate ongoing or acute mental health support for the community. Consultative relationships can be either short-term or ongoing.
I provide clinical supervision and coaching to licensed therapists and supervisors who want to expand and strengthen their clinical and supervision skills.
